YOUR COACHING. YOUR CONTEXT.
Develop the coach you want to become
Results, player needs and the demands of the season can leave little room for your own development. Coaching gives you space to explore what’s working, where you feel stretched and what you want to do differently.
Whether you’re finding your feet or bringing years of experience, we start with the questions that matter to you.
WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND
Six connected areas to explore.
Be clearer about the coach you want to be
“Does the way I coach reflect what I believe?”
01 / COACHING IDENTITY
Explore your values, purpose and approach. Notice the gap between your intentions and your everyday behaviour, and consider the experience you want to create for players.
Work towards: a clearer coaching philosophy you can use to guide your choices.
Turn knowledge into purposeful practice
“What do I need to get better at—and how?”
02 / COMPETENCE
Identify strengths and development needs using examples from your coaching. Choose a specific skill or behaviour to practise, seek useful feedback and review what changes.
Work towards: a focused development plan with practical opportunities to learn.
Build trust in your approach
“Why do I keep second-guessing myself?”
03 / CONFIDENCE
Examine the situations that unsettle you, the assumptions behind your reactions and the evidence of what you already do well. Explore how to respond when things don’t go to plan.
Work towards: a more grounded view of your capabilities and a constructive response to setbacks.
Understand your players. Strengthen your connection.
“How do I challenge each player in a way that helps them grow?”
04 / PLAYER RELATIONSHIPS
Explore how you listen, communicate, give feedback and respond to different needs. Consider whose voice you hear, whose you may miss and how to encourage greater player ownership
Work towards: clearer conversations and more intentional support and challenge.
Choose your response with greater intention
“When should I step in—and when should I let learning unfold?”
05 / DECISION-MAKING
Reflect on real training and match-day decisions. Examine what you noticed, what influenced your response and what other options were available.
Work towards: clearer reasons for your decisions and greater adaptability under pressure.
06 / GAME MODEL INTO PRACTICE
Connect how you want to play with how you coach.
“Can players see our game model in the sessions I deliver?”
Explore the links between your playing principles, desired player behaviours, session design and coaching interventions. Consider what players need to understand, practise and adapt.
Work towards: stronger alignment between your game model, training environment and match-day intentions.
REFLECTION. ACTION. IMPACT
Make the next conversation count on the training pitch.
REFLECT
Bring a session, decision or interaction. Explore what happened and what it reveals about your coaching.
REVIEW
Notice what changed. Draw on observations, feelings, player responses and feedback to decide your next step.
ACT
Choose a change you can test: a question, a session constraint, a feedback approach or a different intervention.

A recent client experience
From second guessing to more intentional coaching
The challenge: An experienced rugby coach was spending considerable time planning sessions but often left questioning their impact. They wanted players to be increasingly more engaged, to take greater ownership, yet found themselves stepping in with instructions whenever training became difficult.
The coaching journey: Through one-to-one conversations the coach explored the gap between their coaching intentions and their behaviours under pressure. They identified practical behaviours to explore, such as clearer learning intentions, more purposeful interventions and more time for players to think and solve problems through enhanced practice design.
The difference: The coach reported greater confidence and belief in deciding when to intervene and when to allow learning to unfold. The noticed players contributing more ideas and taking greater responsibility during training. Their reflections became more focussed, giving them clearer priorities for the next session.
What made the difference? Regular space to think, supportive challenge and accountability helped the coach turn insight into deliberate action.
